HISTORY

An organizational meeting for the purpose of establishing Upsilon Zeta Chapter was held in October 1932 in the back room in the Old Library Building /Trustee Room at Wiley College. Dr. M.W. Dogan was President of the college and was also an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Some of the ladies that were in attendance of this historic meeting were:  Mrs. Hettie Bradford, Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Mary Julia Corde, Mrs. Margaret Hunter, Mrs. Pinky Johnson, Mrs. Daisy Smith, Mrs. Augusta Walton, and Mary Corde. These ladies were former members of Theta Chapter.  They had graduated and wanted to organize a graduate chapter. Their first task on the agenda was to elect a President. Mrs. Mary Julia Corde was elected the first president of Upsilon Zeta Chapter.  The meeting date was scheduled for the first Saturday in each month at
4:00 pm. The calendar year began in September and ended in May.  The attire for all the meetings were Sunday dresses, with hats, gloves,
and high heel shoes. Much emphasis was always placed on finer womanhood!

During the 1950’s, one of the chapter’s most successful fundraisers was implemented: “The Blue and White Scholarship Calendar.” This fundraiser still serves as one of the chapter’s main projects as well as its “Little Miss Blue Revue” pageant.

In January of 1983, Upsilon Zeta Chapter, with the help of the Southern Region Amicae Director and the National First Anti-Basileus, Soror Bobbie Moorehead, along with Upsilon Zeta Chapter’s President, Soror Bettye Fisher, organized the Marshall Zeta Amicae Auxiliary. Amica Mae Carter became the first president of the Marshall Zeta Auxiliary and Soror Sammie Sutton became the auxiliary’s first Amicae Advisor. On April 25, 1984, The Marshall Zeta Amicae Auxiliary received its charter.

On January 12, 1986, Upsilon Zeta Chapter opened its Stork’s Nest facility in their new house located at 709 West Grand Avenue. Soror Zelma Thompson became the first Stork’s Nest Director.
